- the first step to using your own picture for an avatar is to register with an image hosting site. the most popular sites are photobucket and imageshack, but there are quite a few others to choose from if you hunt around.
- once you have completed registering with your chosen host, the next step is to upload the image you would like to use to the host site. the image should be first saved to your computer (i keep mine in 'my documents'), and both of these sites have full instructions on how to upload your images.
- after you have uploaded the image you'll be using, you next need to copy the URL (web address) of your uploaded image, so you can paste it here at the forum in the next step. after uploading your image, you should see several choices of URL's that you can use. i use imageshack as my host, and usually use the 'direct link' URL to my image. an example of a direct link URL looks like this...
img264.imageshack.us/img264/3776/988784me.jpg
- once you've copied the URL, you'll need to go in to your profile and click on 'modify profile'. next, scroll down to where is says "Avatar" and make sure the drop down menu is set to "none" and then paste the URL that you previously copied in the box below that - called "Avatar URL."
- your new avatar should be ready to post, so all you need to do now is click on "modify profile."
a couple of tips...the maximum avatar size allowed is 100 pixels x 100 pixels, which would be perfectly square. i find it's easier to resize the picture i want to use for an avatar to 100 x 100 or smaller before i upload it, or it could end up looking distorted once posted. the boxes below where you pasted your URL labeled "Avatar Width" and "Avatar Height" let you control the size of your picture if you want to, but it isn't necessary to input anything in these boxes. ...an example to why you might want to adjust the size is if you are trying to use a picture larger than 100 x 100 and it wasn't perfectly square to begin with, it could end up appearing distorted as it's dimensions are bigger than the maximum size allowed. if you don't want to resize the photo, you could find out the actual size of the image and then adjust the numbers accordingly in these two boxes. (i really hope that makes sense)

What am I doing wrong? I can't get my avatar to show. I have it uploaded to imageshack. I tried putting all the codes that imageshack provided for me, have the none box clicked and then click modify profile. But all it does is erase the code from the box every time I click on modify profile.

What do you mean by the "none" box? As far as I can tell, you should choose the "direct" code from ImageShack. Paste it in your profile. Make sure you have length and width marked "100". That should be it.

The box where you can pick the sites avatars or none (up above it tells you to make sure the drop down menu for avatars is on 'none'. I tried coping and pasting every code that was given to me in the profile and the size isn't even 100, it's 65X65 so I know it's not to big. It will not show my avatar and when I click my modify profile button all it does is erase the code from my box.

Ok, I'm still trying. I read over everything here over and over. I used to have one and one day it was gone and I've never been able to put my own in here since. I even tried typing it in the box. But whatever I do when I click on the modify button nothing happens and when I go back into my profile, the avatar address is gone. Is my modify button wore out? LOL! Help.

I just tried photobucket and their code will not work here either. But I tried both photobuckets code and imageshack's codes on other web sites and they both worked. So I think the problem is here. Can someone check for me? I also reclicked the 'yes' buttons for showing the avatar. It's got to be something wrong with my profile (buttons?). Please check. Thanks.

I have NO clue how to check for problems either on this board or on Proboards in general. I'll PM the other mods to see if anyone can help.
